What’s not to love about someone else chopping up numerous plant ingredients for a healthful vegan salad? This is a great place to eat and an easy place to grab a salad for take out. Let someone else do all the chopping!
Located on the south end of Hilton Head Island, Healthy Habit serves up delicious, farm-fresh chopped salads featuring locally sourced ingredients, including non-GMO produce and small batch dressings made from scratch. Each salad is, by default, chopped to allow its flavors and textures to envelope every bite.
As I type I’m sitting outside the restaurant (at their old location mid-island on Mathews Drive) enjoying a signature Arcadia salad. It contains mixed greens, wild arugula, quinoa, lentils, edamame (whole soy beans), avocado, and grape tomatoes to which I add tofu cubes and their vegan Cilantro-Lime Chili dressing. Other vegan dressing options are Asian Sesame Ginger, Green Goddess, Herbed Balsamic, and Mediterranean Red Wine.
What I really like about the Healthy Habit menu is that most of their salads are offered as a vegan base to which nonvegans can add animal protein rather than the typical vice versa routine of vegans paying full price for a meal including the nonvegan items that are requested to be omitted. Shout out to Health Habit for reversing that business model!
Also, when requested, the salad can be prepared on a dedicated vegan “green” cutting board as to avoid cross contamination with nonvegan meats and cheeses. If you don’t see a signature salad on the menu that strikes your fancy, you can custom build your own exactly as you want it. And if you don’t want it chopped, you can have it tossed or wrapped in a standard flour or spinach tortilla.
As I’ve been sitting here outside on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant at one of two outdoor tables, the front door has been consistently swinging for customers coming in to eat (seats for about 20 customers) and many others picking up their called-in order. Healthy Habit has established itself as a relatively new-kid-on-the-block vegan-friendly eatery on Hilton Head Island in South Carolina.
With my salad I’m enjoying a Heart Beet juice made of juiced beets, carrots, apples, cucumbers, parsley and lemon. With this afternoon infusion of veggies and fruits, I’m ready to swim, walk the beach, or use Hilton Head Island’s 108 miles of paved shared-use paths for biking or jogging. Impressive for our 12-mile long and five-mile wide island!
When coming inside, order and pay at the counter. Your food will be prepared in the mostly-open kitchen and your name will be called when your order is ready.
Hope and Kevin Yeung are the purveyors of Healthy Habit which they opened in January 2017. Kevin’s love for local ingredients began as a young child when he would accompany his mother to New York City’s Chinatown to help shop for family dinners. In 2001, Kevin enrolled at the prestigious Culinary Institute of America then rose through the ranks at Boston and New York City popular, high-end restaurants. Kevin is now thrilled to combine this culinary pedigree with his entrepreneurial spirit to serve the Hilton Head Island community.
Raised mostly in Florida and Georgia, Hope is a true southern girl who pursued her culinary studies at Art Institute. Hope brings nearly 20 years of house management to her new management role at The Healthy Habit. Her other loves are volunteering at animal rescue groups, scuba diving, snowboarding and, of course, all things Kevin and their young son Benjamin.
Healthy Habit features, besides salad and juices, other vegan delectables such as avocado toast, nice cream toast, and an acai powerbowl for breakfast…which is now served all day long! Lucky us!
Soup is crafted and offered mostly in the cooler months (not so much in the hot South Carolina heat!) but do ask for the Soup of the Day.
While I prefer reusable food ware, I do appreciate that the disposable bowls and lids are compostable. (I bet Kevin and Hope will work with nice, regular customers to bring in their own appropriately sized, clean reusable salad bowls for eat in or take out. Stay tuned!)
