Before impulsively & uncharacteristically picking up the September 2013 copy of Martha Stewart Living magazine, I had no idea what an affogato was. I had never even heard the word.
An affogato is an Italian dessert consisting of vanilla ice cream topped with a shot of espresso coffee. The Italian root word affogare means “to drown.”
While this original recipe sounded delicious, I know I could make a more healthful version as I don’t eat dairy and I avoid consuming coffee. For me it would be banana “ice cream” and green matcha tea.
Here’s how I did it.
I made a pitcher of green matcha tea and a batch of banana “ice cream.”

I scooped the ice cream into a bowl and poured the matcha on top then ate it up with a spoon.
Oh my goodness! What a light, refreshing, sweet, creamy and colorful guilt-free dessert. I loved it! The combination of cold and hot was delightful and the flavors were very complimentary.
I can imagine using almond milk or coconut milk ice cream with matcha, Earl Grey, chai or other delectable tea. The combinations are endless!

Thanks for the post. It is really very good recipe. I want to add one more thing with this banana ice cream. It si coffee. If you mixed it. It’s become more tasty. Try this.
For those who like coffee and who intake caffeine, this sounds like a tasty addition! Thx for the suggestion Anjelina!
